Our Ceramic Pro Packages: Understanding Base Coat andВ Top Coat in Ceramic Coating

These two elements of Ceramic Coating, while similar in some ways, have distinct properties and applications. This article will help you grasp the basics, so you can make an informed decision about what’s best for your car.

The base coat acts as the foundation. This layer, which contains a high percentage of Silicon Dioxide (SiO2), bonds with the surface to create a semi-permanent protective barrier against minor scratches, UV rays, and chemical stains. The base coat contributes to the hardness of the coating, which is why you might hear terms like 9H ceramic coating or 10H ceramic coating, referring to its pencil hardness level.
Following the Base coat, which should be left to sit for 8 hours as per the manufacturer’s instructions, comes the Top coat. Though it contains less SiO2, the Top coat introduces properties not found in the Base coat, making the surface extra glossy, hydrophobic, and smooth.

While Base coats do offer some of these benefits, a top coat enhances hydrophobicity and gloss, adding aesthetic value to your car. This combination of base coat and top coat offers the best of both worlds – protection and aesthetics.

So, in conclusion, the base coat provides hardness and protection to the surface, while the top coat adds gloss and hydrophobicity. However, due to its lower SiO2 content, the top coat’s lifespan is shorter.
